Arctic Monkeys is a British rock band formed in 2002. It currently consists of vocalist and guitarist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer Matt Helders and bassist Nick O'Malley, who replaced previously played in the band Andy Nicholson, who left in 2006.
The band has released several studio albums: Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011), AM (2013), Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018) and The Car (2022), as well as live albums Live At the Apollo (2008), Live In Wellington Town Hall (2009) and Live In The Royal Albert Hall (2020).
The band's first album became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history. The ensemble won seven Brit Awards: twice becoming the best group and three times for the best album of the year. Twice the quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2006, the band won the Mercury Prize, the award given for best album in the UK and Ireland, and was also nominated for the prize in 2007 and 2013. In 2007 and 2013, the band was the headliner of the Glastonbury Festival.
Such success, given the skeptical attitude of the band members towards the music industry and their reluctance to sign a contract with a major label, is largely due to the active distribution of their demos by fans via the Internet, in particular, through P2P and social networks. They were one of the first bands to achieve major success without the support of traditional media such as radio and television, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of this way of promoting new music. The band currently publishes records on the independent label Domino Records.
